VoicePrint's "Deadline Gold" Spotlights National Newspaper Award Winners in Toronto

TORONTO, March 21, 2002 - The light will shine brightly on Wednesday, March 27 at 12:30 and 9 p.m. on two past National Newspaper Award winners: both from The Globe and Mail.

The Deadline Gold series will honour reporter Ian Brown, then with the Globe and now best known for his work at CBC Radio and TVOntario (1984 NNA winner for feature writing), and columnist Allen Abel, also of the Globe back then and now familiar to most Canadians for his feature pieces with CBC Television Sports (1979 NNA winner for sports writing).

Both articles take us back to school. Mr. Brown's story is a compelling, sometimes disturbing, account of life at a suburban high school. In his piece, Mr. Abel travels to Russia and gives us a fascinating look at what really goes on inside a Soviet sports school.

As well as looking back, Deadline Gold also will feature articles nominated for 2001 National Newspaper Awards, culminating April 26 in a live broadcast from Calgary, where this year's winners will be announced.
