Local Charity Wins Its First International Public Awareness Award

June 19, 2003 (Toronto, ON) VoicePrint’s Outreach Department received a Public Awareness Award from the International Association of Audio Information Services (IAAIS) during the IAAIS Awards Banquet last week.

“For a charity like ours, it’s important to get our message out effectively to our potential listeners,” says VoicePrint Vice President Administration, Heather Lusignan. “We’re thrilled to have our Outreach team recognized by an international organization that values the importance of reaching out to the community it serves.”

The On the Road with VoicePrint: Northern Ontario project was one segment of VoicePrint’s pilot outreach program funded in part by the Ontario Trillium Foundation. The project began in June 2002 and was completed in four months. The goal of the campaign was to reach out to low-vision, blind, senior and mobility-restricted residents in northern Ontario through social service agencies, local libraries, churches and other community groups/organizations.

The project managers were Vanessa Carlisle and Pamela Muñoz. This was their first Outreach project in Northern Ontario and plans are in the works to expand to Southwestern Ontario later this year.

VoicePrint, a not-for-profit charity, was established in 1989 to enhance access to published news and information for more than 3.5 million vision- and print-restricted Canadians. VoicePrint is a 24-hour national audio service that reaches more than 6.5 million homes via the S.A.P. of CBC Newsworld; Star Choice, ExpressVu, Look TV and Skycable audio channels; and at www.voiceprint.ca.
