VoicePrint's "Deadline Gold" Spotlights National Newspaper Award Winners in Montreal and Toronto

TORONTO, Feb.18, 2002 - The light will shine brightly on Wednesday, February 20 at 12:30 and 9 p.m. on two past National Newspaper Award winners: one from the Montreal Star; and one from the old Toronto Telegram written by one of the founders of the Toronto Sun.

The Deadline Gold series will honour reporter Frank Lowe of the Montreal Star (1955 NNA winner for feature writing) and writer Peter Worthington of the Toronto Telegram (1969 NNA winner for staff corresponding).

Both articles look at war and the misery, death and destruction that can result. Mr. Lowe's story focusses on the Cold War. In particular, the U.S. Strategic Air Command and its preparations for nuclear attack. In his piece, Mr. Worthington reports on a civil war. In particular, the famine and genocide that resulted when Nigeria and Biafra took up arms against each other.

As well as looking back, Deadline Gold also will feature articles nominated for 2001 National Newspaper Awards, culminating April 26 in a live broadcast from Calgary, where this year's winners will be announced.
