VoicePrint's "Deadline Gold" Spotlights National Newspaper Award Winners at Canadian Press and at Papers in Monitoba and Ontario

TORONTO, Feb. 11, 2002 - The light will shine brightly on Wednesday, February 13 at 12:30 and 9 p.m. on three past National Newspaper Award winners: one from Canadian Press, one from the Winnipeg Free Press and one from the old Toronto Telegram.

The Deadline Gold series will honour reporter Laurie B. McKechnie of the Toronto Telegram (1950 NNA winner for feature writing); reporter Bill Boss of Canadian Press (1951 NNA winner for feature writing); and writer John Dafoe of the Winnipeg Free Press (1985 NNA winner for editorial writing).

All three articles deal with the conflict that follows when people say good-bye to an old way of life and attempt to begin anew. The McKechnie piece is the story of one man's struggle with alcohol and his decision - with help from the science of the day - to overcome it. Mr. Boss's article focuses on a young soldier, his terrible wounds and his desperate quest to return to the front lines in Korea. And Mr. Dafoe's piece is a sharply worded critique of the early days of a newly elected national leader and the choices he does - and doesn't - make.

As well as looking back, Deadline Gold also will feature articles nominated for 2001 National Newspaper Awards, culminating April 26 in a live broadcast from Calgary, where this year's winners will be announced.

Deadline Gold can be heard across Canada on VoicePrint on cable through the S.A.P. of CBC Newsworld, on Star Choice channel 825, on Express Vu channel 967, on Look TV channel 100 (audio 2) or live on the Internet at www.voiceprint.ca.
