Government of Ontario Nominates VoicePrint Volunteers
For Awards
December 4, 2003 (Toronto, ON) - Five VoicePrint Canada volunteers are
scheduled to receive Volunteer Service Awards from the Government of Ontario,
next week for their valuable contribution to print-restricted communities
across the country.
The awards ceremony takes place Wednesday, December 10, 2003 at the Toronto
Centre for the Arts at 7:30p.m.
George Cox has contributed 11 consecutive years at VoicePrint Canada,
reading newspapers and magazines for blind, low-vision, senior and other
print-restricted Canadians. “Receiving an award for something I
love to do seems redundant,” says Cox. “Knowing I make a difference
is a reward in itself.”
Earl Barnsley, Steve Bakowksy, Vivien Feirson and R-J Gilbert will all
receive awards next week for five or more years of service at VoicePrint’s
Toronto location. Henry Bloom, an Ottawa-based reader, received his Volunteer
Service Award a few weeks ago.
“We’re happy the provincial government recognizes the outstanding
achievements of our many volunteers,” says Jerry Bagelman, Volunteer
Coordinator for VoicePrint Canada.
Established in 1989, The National Broadcast Reading Service Inc. (NBRS)
is a not-for-profit organization set up to respond to the needs of blind,
low-vision, senior and other print-restricted Canadians for access to
printed news, information and entertainment. VoicePrint Canada, a division
of NBRS, provides an audio information service via the S.A.P. of CBC Newsworld
and the Internet.
