Quick Facts About VoicePrint

  1. VoicePrint is the primary service of National Broadcast Reading Service (NBRS), which was launched in 1990. It is Canada's exclusive and the World's Largest reading service. A 24-hour News and information audio service offering timely National News material; licensed as a "Tier One" must carry service by the Canadian Radio-television Telecommunication Commission (CRTC).

  2. The service provides information to more than 6 Million blind, low-vision, and print restricted Canadians and their families in more than 8 Million homes across Canada.

  3. It is distributed from Toronto by satellite feeds - through satellite space and time provided by CBC Newsworld - to cable systems throughout Canada and on the Internet by AccessDome. Click here to Listen.

  4. Programming consists primarily of timely News stories published by daily newspapers, magazines and periodicals read by over 500 volunteers across Canada. Each information program runs 30 minutes, is themed (go to program schedule details) and packaged into 8 hour-hour blocks, which are repeated to fill the 24-hour day.

  5. Readings are recorded in Toronto, Ottawa, Kingston, Niagara Falls, Winnipeg, Calgary, Vancouver and Victoria.

  6. In Toronto, blind studio technicians who also manage the network center, complete the overall technical production and post-production. Half of its staff is blind or have other disabilities.

  7. Cable users access the Voiceprint signal as a secondary audio program (SAP) signal on CBC Newsworld or via the Internet.

  8. In its first decade of business, VoicePrint has broadcast more hours of News and information programming than all of Canada's television stations combined, excluding CBC Newsworld.

  9. Key sponsors include Canada's two largest cable companies, Rogers, Shaw and CBC TV and the distribution support of more than 150 distribution companies across Canada and two in the Northern Territories. Additional sponsors include BCE Inc., Alliance Atlantis and AccessDome.
